Default Sub enclosure questions.... and removal of the rear seat... Your votes and opinions wanted...

I was at the stereo shop today making an appointment for my enclosure to be built, and my amps to be remounted.

I've been deciding on which way to go with the subwoofers... I'm pretty set on using a 12" sub to hit those low notes, and I'll likely use either one or both of my current JL12W6's for the time being in the new enclosure, until they're replaced with Adire Brahma Mk2's. Either will likely use one sub since i'm using a 12, and both pics show 10's. Also my amp is larger than either of these side to side.

So here's the questions....

Those of you that have removed the rear seat... do you regret it? Any advantages or disadvantages you've found (besides the obvious)? I never have people sit back there.

Sound wise... which would likely be better? (Both from the subwoofers, and acoustics of the car?)

Default No back seat here...

I love it. Yeah, it's obviously lighter. Down fall is road noise (tire hun). I am in the process of having a custom box built in. I would definetly Dynamat the floor of the car once the rear seat is removed prior to installing the box although the box will deadin' the road noise.

Default My setup is with one W6(v2), seat out...

Definitely pull the rear seat. Makes the car's utility much more. Utility was a priority for me, this thing ain't no garage ornament, and I'm likely to throw my mtn bike in for a ride. Only downsides are 1. a little noisier (if this was really an issue for me I'd drive a luxo cruiser and not choose an APR exhaust or performance tires) and 2. there's a larger area for things to roll around in back (you do have to organize/restrain things better, there's no rear seat to contain them.). The (former) rear seat well is a good place for the woofer(s), but either with a W6 or the Brahmas, the box will have to be elevated (i.e, not a flat cargo floor like Jenner's 10 above.) My first (fiberglass bottom) box was flat, that was part of the design objective.

I'm also on my "mk2" (second version), working on a third. My setup is more like Jenner's (your top pic, from way back when, and I had a fiberglass bottom molded from the floor boards with the back seat out. (See my pic post for some idea) This didn't work well, even well constructed and with dynamat, because the fiberglass bottom rattled too much (almost looked like a woofer vibrating) against the floor. This was with a JL W3v2, so it would be worse with a W6 or Brahma. I like the single W6 for now, nice bass, depends on your music. If I was a hardcore hiphop guy, I'd probably want a second woofer (but I'm not) and though I tend to be a bit of a basshead, this thing has plenty..in fact I usually have to turn it down 'cuz I get a headache after a while. Nice to have it there for some pounding though.

The second version (current) has the (taller) W6, so this box couldn't be flat like the first one with the W3. Kinda sits in the middle of the rear seat well angled up and back. Trying to make the box a bit flatter/more flush with the cargo floor.

Amps and crossovers are in the passenger side former first aid kit well, and the XM brain sits where the changer used to sit.

Hoping to finish this project up soon, will definitely post more pics when done...

Default I'll have to elevate even with a 7.25" depth?

Hmm.. raised... interesting....

I was thinking of handling the sliding around issue with one of those audi organizer floormats. Noise won't be an issue as it will be dynamatted.

So fiberglass bottom rattles? Was it thick enough? And did you put dynamat between the fiberglass and the metal seat panel?

If I do use fiberglass, it'll likely just be for the bottom panel and only below the woofer (to get the most volume and best mounting). However, I was considering doing something like Lightweights in that I would have plexi on the front and top of where the woofer would be mounted, with the back and sides mostly likely being mirrored.

Another issue with me right now which you hit on is to use one or two woofers... I've always ran 2.... so I don't know if one can cut it so to speak... however with the Brahma.. I think that one can be up to snuff with good power behind it.

I'm also coming from 12's... so I figured that if I had to go to one speaker.. I'd go big.

So many things to decide on.. I'm leaning further and further toward rear seat removal. I'm going to do some experimentation at the shop before we finalize, and mount one sub into a generic enclosure temporarily and move it around the back with and without the rear seat so I can get an "idea" of it.

I actually wish that I could pull just 1/2 of the rear.. but that might be more of a nightmare.

Some of the noises coming from my car I believe are due to the rear seats. I'll likely install my harness bar permanently to make up for the rigidity lost from not having rear seats.

Default Video of Brahma 10 to give you an idea of the woofer....

I might consider going with one 10... (though I feel like I might regret it later on)... for space issues.

Adire Brahma 10

Default Version 3? DAMM..

One thing I noticed while building this one is that it certainly goes a whole lot faster the second time around..

Im finishing version 2 of the sub enclosure.. The first one was a little too small, so I increased the volume this time around.. I finally finished the MDF frame today, glassed it to the fiberglass base, and hope to have it fired up on sunday.. I also decided to copy John and move the amp from the storage bin to the area where the stock amp is .. What a pain that was..

Any final pictures of version 1, 2, or 3??
