Synthetic (Mobil 1, RP): when to change the oil versus when to change filter?
What have you done: Change both together on same interval, or split the oil changes with a filter-only change?

I've heard mention of folks changing the filter @ 5K, and the whole sheebang @ 10K.
I would not leave a filter 'on' during any oil change.

the filter is rated to 30,000 km (18k miles) so why change that early?
I have done oil analysis with synthetic at 10k drain intervals and they've always come back Ok. If I was going to do anything at the 5k interval, I'd probably change the oil itself, leaving the messier filter job for 10k intervals... but frankly unless you've got unusually harsh conditions it's prob'ly overkill.
