Is synthetic oil needed in a non-turbo engine?

Getting ready to do my first oil change (30K mile) on my VR6 GTI and I am thinking of using Mobil 1 or Valvoline Synpower. I was wondering if my naturally aspirated VR6 will benefit from the use of a synthetic oil? Thanks

Theory being, the oil isn't subjected to the temperature extremes in a NA engine like it is in a turbo engine. You also don't have to worry about the oil baking into the journal bearings of a turbo.
To be honest, if you change the oil on schedule every time, you will never have a problem with regular oil. The internal bits should outlast the rest of the engine (assuming nothing catastrophic happens).

I'm sure synthetic is good. Don't think it will add x years to the engine though. Got 200,000 mi on my 92 accord on dealer oil and filter, at 5K or so intervals, not a problem. Car runs as good as new.
Using dealer oil and filter on the TT at 10K intervals now. We will see how it goes. If the TT NEEDED synthetic, I would think Audi would provide it at service and tell owners not to use dino oil with bright yellow stickers all over the car and to use only synthetic.
