BODY:
New robotic technology is being used by Audi to apply thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) to the windscreen and backlite sealing systems of the TT model, in frameless flush glazing which forms a part of the styling of the car.

Developed by Sekurit Saint-Gobain, the system uses a grade of AES' Santoprene TPE specially developed for this application, giving design flexibility, ease of processing, excellent sealing performance, weatherability and aesthetic matching with other sealing systems.

The TPE profiles are applied and bonded to the glass modules using a robotic extrusion system and are shipped to the Audi assembly line for installation. A PU assembly glue is placed on a pre-applied long-life primer and the glass is assembled into the car body in a single-step operation.

Dr Ulrich von Alpen, a Board Director of Sekurit Saint-Gobain, commented that the use of the robotic extrusion technology combined with the Santoprene material enables the use of more complex designs of profile, while its thermoplastic nature permits in-line formation of the joint. The ETP also gives better long-term sealing performance during the lifetime of the car, in the temperature range -40oC to 120oC.

Default Very interesting, thanks. Does this mean that Safe-Lite can't just come out and replace my glass

Default Deny, that is actually how the windshields are INSTALLED, not manufactured!

It is a special bonding agent, I am sure the glass is nothing special, unless they mean that the inside platic is also special so it can react to the bonding sealant. That didn't seem very clear, at least to me.
