Right on. Aluminum block would only save maybe 40 lbs...
if that. Even though aluminum is 1/3 the weight of cast iron, it's weaker, and requires iron/steel cylinder liners (as gdwiTT said), plus more aluminum to get the strength. It's also a fairly old design. Production aluminum casting techniques have improved, so the next generation could very well be aluminum.

Not to nitpick, but corrosion is also (infrequently) a concern.
I've seen people working cylinder corrosion -- haven't done it myself.

It's one big reason the 1.8t can taken such big heat and stress loads that would have lessor motors
...warping their heads. It weighs more but can't be beat for wear and heat management.

Mine is under 2800, and I do think stage 3 would work on a FWD, IF a Quaife differentail and 6 sp
..dog trans were added. It will cast around $10,000 but that is if fact where I plan to go.
