no, just "different" (and heavier, of course). otherwise both are FINE for the intended purpose...

Default Dunno about you US-TT-owners...

...but here in Germany we don't get shoot at that
often so that we would need bulletproof motor

Default Right on. Aluminum block would only save maybe 40 lbs...

if that. Even though aluminum is 1/3 the weight of cast iron, it's weaker, and requires iron/steel cylinder liners (as gdwiTT said), plus more aluminum to get the strength. It's also a fairly old design. Production aluminum casting techniques have improved, so the next generation could very well be aluminum.

Default On paper, APR stage III on a 180 FronTTrack would come pretty close

as that is what that car weighs.

Default The 1.8t (and vw 1.8s before) is based of a Vw diesel block..

And thus inherently stronger and its a proven design...its been in use for over 20 years...

Default Not to nitpick, but corrosion is also (infrequently) a concern.

I've seen people working cylinder corrosion -- haven't done it myself.

Cylinder sleeves, of course, have their own drawbacks. Cheers!

There's a few out there that would empty a clip if I drove by, I'm sure. (wink)

Default It's one big reason the 1.8t can taken such big heat and stress loads that would have lessor motors

...warping their heads. It weighs more but can't be beat for wear and heat management.

Default Mine is under 2800, and I do think stage 3 would work on a FWD, IF a Quaife differentail and 6 sp

..dog trans were added. It will cast around $10,000 but that is if fact where I plan to go.
