There IS a fix for the CD player whine! (more updates, and a question)
I just got my car back from its eight days at Service.
Among other things, they seem to have fixed the CD player. Apparently their original fix killed FM radio reception, but somehow they restored it without bringing back the whine. I don't have the specifics, but will post them as soon as I know more.
They also replaced the sending unit for the oil pressure warning, and replaced the wheel that they damaged during a service stop two weeks ago (it looks like a used wheel, but it's gouge-free. I'm not going to ask what happened to my original wheel).
I'll test the fog lights tonight.
Re: the gear grind. Despite the fact that it happened in front of half of the service staff while a go-for was moving the car, they are saying that maybe the clutch wasn't fully depressed. (Basically, I interpret this as them saying that after eight years of driving, I don't know how to use a clutch).
Question for those of you who've had your instrument clusters replaced: is the replacement *noticably* dimmer than your original? I still can't read any of the LED information in bright light -- even with the dimmer on the brightest setting. I never had this problem originally, and the A6 I've been driving for more than a week was also much brighter....

Joe, was your whine a constant sound, or an intermittent morse-code beeping?
I have the latter, even though my service department doesn't believe it. I seem to remember people here reporting both problems.
Pat R -- Arlington, Virginia

dim instrument panel
Audi's (at least my A6) sense the outside brightness and brighten and dim the dot-matrix displays (including the stereo display on some cars) separately from the rest of the console.
Perhaps your sensor is disconnected and so it is always on dim?
On my car I can drive from outside to into a parking garage and watch the displays dim down in stages over the next 2 seconds.

Re: There IS a fix for the CD player whine! (more updates, and a question)
Saw a fix for CD player noise (generic) in a VW tech bulletin (same Panasonic 6disc CD changer is used in the TT, Jetta, NB, Passat) and it recommended removing the ground wire at the CD player. Theory is to only use the ground lead in the cable that feeds from the head unit to the changer, and that the double ground was introducing the noise. I haven't tried it but it sounds sound.
