Default Timing belt tension

We installed existing fairly (5k miles) new timing equipment. We compressed the tensioner slowly and locked with pin to installed.
After pulling pin (and helping the tensioner a bit by hand to fully extend), the belt tension is quite low. When rotating the tensioner pulley to tighten belt, it will go back to fairly slack. It seems the tensioner has not enough spring force to keep proper tension.
Engine runs fine, belt runs smooth.
But don't feel very good about the low belt tension.

How tight should the timing belt be?

Thank You for doing this for us all. I finally replaced mine this weekend. 110k miles on it. I did the metal impeller pump and the Kevlar belt. Everyone went pretty good.

A couple of comments where things weren't real clear.

The motor mount that is attached to the motor doesn't come out until the timing belt is removed. At least for me. You remove all the bolts and it seemed like an impossible puzzle to remove it. Once the timing belt was removed it had clearance to come out.

Rough Idle upon reassembly: There is a vacuum hard line hose that gets moved running from the front to back. It's good sized and there is no clamp on it. It was a quick find and fix, but something to mention to others.

I used this guide about a year ago to do my timing belt. If I recall, you don't need to remove the motor mount. Just remove the motor mount bolts and leave the motor mount sitting there, and work around it!

Still a great go to guide for those planning on doing a timing belt job. I'm 70 years old and I took my time on the job 2.5 days and I completed an issueless timing job. My 2001 with 50k miles on it is ready to go for another bunch of years :-) New timing belt, tensioner roller, tensioner, serpentine & tensioner, new oil, new coolant air filter and plugs. Took it out for a run this afternoon pulls hard and just runs great I am so happy to have the peace of mind that my TT has many more years of fun driving ahead.
