Tire practically separated, sidewall from tread. Was cruising about 70mph and smelled burning rubber. 60 seconds later I was hobbled.
What is 1st step for warranty replacement- Dealer or tire shop? Only 5k miles. Do I go for 4 new ones?

If it's bridgestone RE040, try the dealer first. They might cover it, although it's not the "normal" failure that's covered.
Otherwise, tires are the one thing Audi doesn't cover, you'll probably have to go to the tire dealer.
You should be okay replacing just 1, but have them put it on the back.

is there a lot of history on this tire and a response from Audi?
I am noticing significant wear on different parts of all 4 RE040's and am rotating at every 5K. I remember the dealer reinforcing the tire warranty as strictly non-Audi.

Check with Audi -- 040s have known problems and dealers have been told to replace questionable tires. I would venture that one that has already failed is questionable:-)
