Default Torque wrench question:

I had been discussing with my father that I was looking for a torque wrench for use on the TT.

The other day, he was at Coastal Tool in Hartford, buying some other things, and bought for me one of the two torque wrenches that they carry. Evidently, the choice was between a 3/8" model and a 1/2" model, both S-K. He picked up the 1/2" model for me, but I can return it if I don't like it.

The wrench is a 1/2" drive S-K wrench, 25-250 ft-lbs. I will really mostly be using it for changing/rotating wheels, so I don't need anything that goes up to 250 ft-lbs. The wrench will cost me $75+tax, so if I return it I can get a less-expensive one from Tire Rack.

I don't mind paying extra for a good tool (hey, having lots of good tools is important!) but if it's not really the appropriate tool for this task, I'll return it.

What is the opinion of the TT braintrust?

Default Sounds like a satisfactory solution. It may be slightly overkill, but better too much than too litt

Default Re: Torque wrench question:

I just bought a Craftsman 1/2" torque wrench that sounds similiar to what you have. It probably is overkill, but I figure it'll do the job and it's a good tool to have around.

Default sounds good

I have a 3/8" wrench, but the max torque was just under what I needed for the TT. Got a 1/2" drive that goes up to 250ft-lb so the TT is well under the max, but I guess the tool is more likely to behave accurately in the middle of its range, rather than at its limits, so even if the 3/8" just squeaked into the needed range, the 1/2" may be a little more reliable, who knows. Other reasons to keep it: occasionally you'll need a 1/2" drive anyway - sometimes you can only find big sockets in 1/2". And like someone else said, someday you may be glad to have the extra torque on tap. You always have the option of not using the extra torque, but if it's too wimpy, there's nothing you can do...

Default just perfect...

....the only ones better are facom, mac and snap-on...

you will also need a 1/2x6 extension and a 17mm deep for the wheels...
