Default Treadwear explanation??? (more)

Ok, what's treadwear all about? I know that it is an index number used to help people compare tire life expectancy. Am I simplifying here?

How does an 040 with a treadwear of 140 and traction of A compare handling-wise to a 730 with a treadwear of 300 and traction of AA?

Does the stickiness really count for anything anymore? (That's what I used to think...that treadwear told you what to expect regarding stickiness).

Help?!

Default There is no law that says you can't display a treadwear number that is lower than tests indicate

Marketing guys determine what number to use

Default I don't think you can use treadwear as an indicator of stickiness anymore.

My RE730s handle significantly better than my RE040s did, despite treadwear values of more than double.

Default Thanks.

Now, if only I could buy the tires online, put them in my TTR and drive to a shop to get them put on. The TTR is too small! Someone will have to follow me in my Volvo for that service call! :-) Irony?

Default I had to make two trips with my tires.

I could have put all four in my A4 and then come back in my TTR, but that still would be two trips. ;-)

Default Like I said yesterday, see Tirerack.com...

Here's a quote:

"Treadwear

Treadwear receives a comparative rating based on wear rate of the the tire in field testing following a government specified course. For example, a tire grade of 150 wears 1.5 times longer than a tire graded 100. Actual performance of the tire can vary significantly depending on conditions, driving habits, care, road characteristics, and climate."

Default I had my tires sent to my Audi dealer from TireRack, they installed and balanced...

since they have a known good tire mounting system that does not scratch my wheels, and if they did, guess who gets to pay for a new one: the parts source!

The one time I had a patch put on my crappy 040's the tire shop gouged my wheel.

Many shops will accept direct orders from TireRack and charge you for the mount and balance.<p>Ivan
