Default Trying to track down my miss... a couple of concerns.

I unplugged my MAF to rule that out...

Unplugged the maf, while doing so the tab broke off because its like -2 degrees out... it seems to stay on so I'll worry about that later.

Anyway, I unplug it and the CEL comes on, as well as the esp light. Is that normal?

Even after I plugged it in the ESP light goes away, but the CEL continues to stay on.

After I got over that issue I drove it, they miss is still there after the MAF is unplugged... so I guess that narrows it down to the coilpacks.

I'm still waiting on my vagcom cable or I'd try to figure it out myself. If anyone could help me out, I would appreciate it. If it isn't the coils, I don't know what it would be.

Default Normal

unplugging the maf trips the esp light. the cel light should go away in about 25-50 miles, but you'll still get codes from it.

Default Thank you so much!

That clears up the new issue..

Now, what could my miss be from. Would most of you say coilpacks?

Even if its just one I'm going to replace all of them so I know their status for sure.

Seems like I have a healthy MAF.

I have heard the ESP light comes on when the maf is bad... I've started the car on occasion and the ESP light has been on, restart and its gone.

Silly TTs

Coilpacks or spark plugs. It's pretty common.

Default John, in your opinion.

Since I don't have vagcom yet... what would you do.

I installed NGKs (the popular copper replacement) about 8k miles ago.

Is it a pretty good chance that its just the coilpacks?

Since I'm in there should I replace the plugs too?

Default Well, you could just get one coilpack and swap it one at a time to see if it goes away

I'd probably just throw 4 new coilpacks at it tho. Maybe pull the plugs while you're in there just to make sure they look ok and are gapped properly.

Default Again could also be the harness leading ot the coil packs

There have been a couple of these, including mine where the insulation failed on the harness, leaving bare metal on not just one of the wires but a series of them. I think that I had 13 gaps. There is a VW TSB on it, but no Audi one. VW has a kit apparently to replace it, if this is that case.

Cool, the problem is it doesn't do it all the time...

I'll get 4 new ones.
