Default TT (2004) Will Not Go into Gear or Reverse

Last night my TT would not go into reverse, nor would it shift from 2nd to 3rd gear. This is the second time this has happened. The first time was January, 2007. It fixed itself after shutting off the engine. It fixed itself again last night. In January 2007 I brought it to the dealer, who could not find anything wrong.

This morning, I called the dealer again, and they suggested not bringing it in until it was having the same problem. There seems to be a slight hesitation on the gears catching when I go into reverse, but not all the time.

I searched this forum, and was not able to find anything on this.

Is this a known issue? Is there anything I could tell the dealer service dept to look for?

Thanks

Check the linkage on top of the transmission under the intake hose....see if anything has fallen in there, or if there is anything loose. While it could be an internal issue, some have reported problems with loose linkage or crap falling onto that area...

This is going to sound stupid but - I just open the hood and look for debris? Do I take off the cover?

Yes.

Yes.

I found that I dropped a rag down there one time when I was working on cleaning up the engine a bit. I think I was driving with it there for a month or two until I noticed.

Good question,it's not very obvious what transmission or engine this car has.

I am thinking this guy maybe has a DSG or a FWD Tiptronic.

Maybe he doesn't know either.
