Default you were right but auctions with high starting bids get 30 to 40% less hits on avg. <hits =<$$

That was the point I was attempting to make.

That is crap, items with a reserve as you suggested fetch even less money.

Default Unless people know what they're bidding on and know the fair market value of the offering..

YOu're dealing with a limited audience here...

Default not true at all. ----->>>>>

if the seller starts the auction with a low bid he ensures that more people will see the auction through initial scanning. The more people who see the auction the more are likely to bid. The more bids which are rendered early lead to the possibility that a bidding war will ensue.

Because a reserve price is hidden to the bidder it cannot cause an item to, "fetch even less money."

It's only effect is to prevent an item from not reaching a final bid which would not be acceptable to the seller and also it can cause a bidder to increase his "final" bid if he sees that his "final" bid did not break the reserve price.

Ask anyone who does serious business on ebay it this is not the case. As a power seller who has conducted over 15000 auctions I can tell you that in my experience it is all true. Especially part about the 30 to 40 % less hits with a high starting bid.

Default I agree that there is a small core of people who may know this but Ebay is for the larger audience.

are you suggesting that the seller only wants fair market value?
if that were the case he could and should use the "buy it now" option.

I am guessing that he knows the value and would gladly take more if he could get it.

There are well tried and proven ebay techniques which will all but ensure higher prices if used.

Just like cold air intakes, there are many ways to skin a cat but as you know some ways are better than others.
