Default THE TT Fuel Gauge Issue

Recently, my fuel gauge has been indicating that there's still a 1/2 tank and the miles-to-go indication is I need gas. I've used the vag-com to determine that the resistance from the sending units is within range and in sync with the trip compter -- not the gauge. This points to the fuel gauge being faulty -- i.e., instrument cluster. Since there is a core charge for a new instrument cluster, has anyone ever attempted to fix their own gauge/cluster? I haven't disassembled it yet to see how they drive the gauge.

Default The gauge is a stepper motor, driven by a microcontroller

on the instrument cluster. There is a KNOWN PROBLEM with all TT instrument clusters manufactured before sometime in 2002. They were made with defective microcontrollers which have leaky flash memory cells and will eventually loose their programming. The symptoms of these failures vary, but inproper gage readings is one.

This is an issue which is known to Audi. The clusters were defective in material and workmanship from day 1, whether or not they exhibited symptoms. This is an item which Audi is obligated to cover under warranty, whether or not the symptoms occurred during the warranty period. As I said, they were defective from the date of manufacture.

Good luck, though, since Audi hasn't publicly admitted this, and will likely tell you it's not in warranty. If you want to get a lawyer and go after them, contact me privately, I can provide evidence of their knowledge and dishonesty regarding this issue.

Default I have an early-build '01 w/ the warranty up in Sept; only 9k miles. Still on orig clstr.

Any ideas on how I can get Audi to swap mine out besides having it go?

What are the parts and labor costs for a cluster replacement these days?

P.S. I know I should be driving more!

Default Yes, is there documentation about this for future reference?

My '01 is still in warranty (prev owner didn't drive it much) but I'm concerned down the road...
