TT Poll: How many drivers here, properly Heel / Toe when shifting down and braking?
#41
What is "braking"?
--> I refrain from this practice, it builds up too much of the brake-dust on the rims. However, on the drum-braked, syncro-lacking, death-machine: I double clutch, heel toe, etc.

My understanding of it...
is that yes, TBW is closed from accleration/power to wheels when your foot is on the brake, but this doesn't stop the gas pedal from creating revs for matching... heel/toe still works fine to create that throttle blip when rev matching.
But if you're just street driving, heel/toe is really unnecessary unless you're practicing for your weekend excursions on the track... On the other hand, double-clutching is always a good idea - saves mechanical wear and tear.

Here's how I learned:
1) The heel of my right foot rests slightly to the right of the gas pedal. When I heel-toe, my foot is angled to the left about 30 degrees from vertical.
This positioning felt completely foreign at first. All my life, I have driven with my heel to the LEFT of the gas pedal, and my foot angled over to the RIGHT.
2) LOTS of low-speed practice around town. For the first month or two, I always felt like my foot was about to slip off the brake pedal. There was no way I would have tried it on a track. Gradually, I got more comfortable with it over time. When I finally tried it on the track, it felt GREAT!
Good luck!
