Default You will be safe with the 2003...

There were DEFINITELY some lemon cars early on, but those bugs are getting sorted out and most are not problems anymore.

You went to some very biased sites to be sure. But remember, you'll find the SAME sites for Honda, Toyota, etc.... no marque is perfect, and people can be extremely vocal about their problems (and it's easier to focus on the bad things than the positive aspects in your research).

I've had my 2002 Roadster for one year/ 15,698 miles. I drive the hell out of it (I'm always flooring it, late braking, etc.), and it has had these three repairs:

- Timing belt tensioner roller (never heard of this problem before)
- headlight switch (foglights were always on)
- glovebox door (I ripped the handle off when opening it)

None of which left me stranded, and all were easy warranty claims. I would give my car top marks in reliability, build quality.... and it is a blast to own and drive.

I have a 2000 QC, 46K, no major problems, and I still get heads turn when I pass. I love my TT.

My very early '01 TTQR has had the following problems:

1. Both seat heater switches broke
2. Headlight switch bad (Fog lights always on)
3. 2 bad MAF's
4. Turbo bypass valve bad
5. Radio door replaced (wouldn't open fully)
6. Air pump (pollution control) bad
7. Engine temp. sensor bad
8. Trip computer display faded when hot (replaced instrument panel)
9. Power top pump motor failed / replaced (major job!)
10. Electric lock for CD-changer door failed.
11. Engine vacuum leak (replaced several seals)

I'm sure I'm forgetting something.

And right now, it's in the shop with a coolant leak which was diagnosed as the water pump. Hopefully, I'll get it back tomorrow.

My warranty runs out mid-April, and I'm scared to death to keep it past that. And, as much as I love the looks and other attributes of the car, I can't help but think I'd be a fool to buy another one with my current experience. I'm literally to the point I'm just wondering how soon I'll have to take it back in for something else.

The dealer's been great at trying to take care of me, but I'm on a first-name basis with nearly the entire service department. That's not good!

I really wish I could say something positive about the car's reliability, but it simply has been completely the opposite.

The amazing thing is... I still like the car!

Default There are plenty of problem-free 2001s around...

... but I would suggest that you go with a later model year (the 2003). Have fun, and you're going to love the car. Let us know when you get it!

Default Low volume, plus early model run = problems.

I had a laundry list of issues with my 2000 GMC Yukon also. What matters is how well the dealership handles it. I'd rather visit my Audi dealer (Advantage, Houston) a dozen times than my GMC dealer once.

There is more variation in number of problems between individual cars than between brands. Again, the question is whether or not your local dealer is pleasant about the whole thing. If your nearest Audi dealer is 100 miles away and staffed by *******s, then I wouldn't buy one. Mine's 40 miles and pleasant, so I'd buy another one. It's usually better to get a later edition, however. My 2000 A4 was bulletproof. It was not, however, waterproof. Sigh.
