Default TT wont't start....

I'm hoping that someone can ease my anxiousness about this problem. If you have had a similar problem, please let me know what the fix was.

Yesterday (Saturday) morning, the car does not start. I turn the key and you hear a rapid rattle sound "tat-tat-tat..." until you let the key go. The clock resets to 12 AM 7/1/1998. The trip odometer resets to 0 miles.

I jump start the car, and everything seems fine. I go on my trip and after the car sits for about 5 hours, the same problem occurs again. I get another "jump" and it is back to normal. After getting back home (about a 30 mile drive), I let the car sit for a few minutes and try to start it again. It starts right up. I try starting it again this morning (Sunday) and I get nothing.

Obviously, my battery is dead. But why? The car is only 7 months old.

I guess it could be the alternator, but it did start up again after being off for a few minutes, so it is charging the battery back up.

What else could cause this?

TIA,
Sang

Default Sounds like a dead battery. The noise is the starter attempting to run on not enough juice.

I think you will find if you test the battery - it is caput.

Default Has happened here before... you need a new battery (warrantee)

About 12 months ago, a few folks had the exact same problem. Only "fix" was a new battery from dealer. Perhaps if you call them, they will order one and save you one trip.

Or, you can call Roadside Assistance and get them to take your car to the dealer for you - on a flatbed.

Good luck.

According to my parts friend, Audi batteries suck and need to be replaced often.

Default possibly the overhead lights staying on?

there have been several reports of cases where the inside courtesy lights over the windshield don't go out after you leave the car. if that happens, it could drain the battery over time.

Did you check the tightness of the cable clamps? Could be the only problem.

The same thing happened to my 98 A4 just this morning. Getting the Rat a Tat a Tat when I try to start the car. I assume its the battery or the solenoid.

Off to get a new battery I suppose.
