TTR Enigne OIL Question???
I just took a long trip to Vegas and back total of 560 miles. I checked the oil level of the vehicle after cool down and found the oil to be very very low. I want to know what brand and grade is most optimal to use? The service people that I have talked to told me many different things. Some said 10W-30, 15W-50, 20W-50 and I was so confused. WHat brand and weight is best?

I heard that synthetic is not recommended before your 1st service because you want the oil rings to seat properly. I have about 4000 miles on the car right now and no 1st service yet.

True....its not even advised to change the current oil u use now, since its the
"break in oil". People who change their oil prematurely found that they burn oil at 10kmiles.

So what should I do in my case? I just want to top off the oil for now. So I can drive the car at a safe level. Should I just take it to the dealer to have them top off the oil with Castrol (conventional oil) 10W-40/15W-50???

Can this "myth" be dispelled once and for all everyone?
The Audi TT comes from the FACTORY with Synthetic oil in the engine and transmission! If you lived in Europe the oil change interval would be 10,000 miles! It is only in the US that we are afraid of going much beyond 3,000. It is only recently that the German car companies are "pushing the limits" with 5,000 change intervals. Pretty soon it will be 10,000 for us as well.
The TT and ALL cars DO NOT come with a break-in oil! That is something left in everyones heads from the 1970's and '80's. Engines are built to such high tolerances that it is not necessary to use a break-in oil. Those oils were used to help the rings and pistons and valves wear themselves in so that the engine performed better. The engines are nice and tightly built today becasue the machining is that much better.

Go to the dealer and ask them to have a look at it .. .
Make your 5k service appointment. What line is the oil showing at on the dipstick? Is it below the minimum line? Is it between the min and max lines?
In all likely hood you can wait for the 5k service, just go in early for the service. You can always go in and ask the Service Mgr to take a look at it for you.

I read something in VWVortex a while back about a guy in a VW jetta that changed it the day he got
to full syt. He later started burning oil or and other werid things started happening. There was a big debate about it there a while back. I have no seen it in an Audi, but the VW being a close relationship with Audi, I assumed it has that kind of oil. In addition, when I bought my car from Barrier Audi, they specifically told me not to change my oil or I will risk ruining the engine. I am just going from my knowledge and I don't mean to misguide someone with bad info. Thats the way I always knew it. You learn everyday, right?
