Default turbo noise update: still clueless ...

incase you missed my previous posts, a TT i'm looking at, and want to buy, has an exhaust leak and the turbo was suspiciously loud. i thought the noise was due to the exhaust leak, but now that's fixed, and it's still the same.

what else could it be? everything's OEM on it (as far as i can see, at least). from what i've heard, even if it IS louder, it isn't a bad thing... it still has me scratching my head though.

Default What year? If it's an 03 could be a problem with the EGT sensor in the turbo

mine was crossthreaded and had a leak, another 03 within the same build time had one that was loose causing a boost leak. Both made a high pitched whining sound at 4500rpms or higher.

Default no it's a 2000 ...

it doesn't sound like a 'bad' noise -- it sounds like what the turbo sounds like... but it's double as loud.

Default some possibilities >

1. is there a resonator (mid-pipe) missing?
2. it's possible a bolted connection at the manifold/turbo or turbo/downpipe or at the dp/exhaust is the culprit - I suspect my original milltek install was not quite perfect - my car was quieter after I put a new turbo in, and there should have been no difference, except the connections at the turbo.
3. is it possible the cat's been taken out?
4. if it were a K03/K03S, I'd say it might be possible the turbo's been replaced with one w/o a turbo muffler.

Hope this helps a bit.

Default yup turbos are dependent on pressure and back pressure to work ...

exhaust leak gets rid of back prssure and could have damaged something...
