Turn signal problem, flashing is erratic and sometimes stops blinking

Just started yesterday. Instead of a steady "on-off" it double-blinks, pauses, and occasionally just stops blinking.
I don't have any bulbs out and it's both sides which are doing it. The emergency flashers don't seem to be acting erratically but I only tried them for 15-20 seconds last night.
From searching I see lots of mentions of the flasher relay. Is that it? And how much of the dash needs to be dissasembled to get to it? One person said the whole lower dash was removed, another said just the radio.
I have to go in for my 20k service soon anyway, but I'd like have a good idea exactly what's wrong.

Had same problem, as I understand it the same relay is used for both turn indicators and hazard flashers. If the hazards are OK but turn signal isn't then it sounds like the switch on the steering column. Do all other functions on that stalk (cruise control) work OK? (Proves wiring and plugs to a certain degree)
Rectified by warranty replacement of column switch.

No kidding.
There is no external "flasher".
Auid uses two relays in this button, and a bunch of electronics.
Each relay controls that particular side of the car.
Both relays are used when the flasher button is pressed.
Copper squares here.

This switch may be bad.
Hope it's under warranty.
this has been reported to be a problem for a few people.
Yes, the switch needs to be replaced.
Yes, the dealer needs to do this.
Yes, the radio needs to be removed.
Yes, It will take a few hours to do this.

used to be. Sometimes this first click... when you are turning the wheel, doesn't seem to happen. But then again, it could also just be that I'm listening for something I never normally do.
Since the flashers work, I'd bet it is probably the column switch. Thanks.

You can clearly hear the CLICK CLICK coming from the button on the dash and I've seen your picture of it before, but my question was what they have to do to get to the switch.
But, if both turns are erratic and the hazards work, I don't think it's the relays. Thoughts?

i have 2003TTC. for 2003 there is 2 relleys.
one is for emergency ony for the turn. changed both, after second was changed the problem went away.
as for serch there is nothing on TT side, i've sserched & posted it semes to be some new for TT,
if you serch all Audi it is comon in A4.
make your dealer change both relleys.

the emer. flasher is a more basic circuit, that is controled simply by the red button.
The emer. flasher circuit needs to flash 2X as many bulbs, so this circuit is isolated from the turn flasher part
The turns use a separte part of the circuit, and it may be that part that is not flashing properly.
