Default Update to Fuel gauge woes, Techron so far ineffective>>

I noticed that when ignition is switched on the gauge flicks to the right really fast and continues to overread. On switching ignition off, the gauge flicks realy fast to the left but does not not rest in the normal "off" position but a bit to the right of it on the second red mark.
BTW I sometimes get the "red" centre screen on cold days, but it goes away for months. Occasionally the rev counter wakes up a bit slow on start up too, but this comes and goes. Bad voltage stability or bad earth??
If the cluster is on its way out, then I will wait with any fuel gauge repairs and int the mean time use the computer and mileage to indicate when its time to fill up.

Sounds like a cluster.

Default Does the "Miles to empty" read correctly or does it correspond with the fuel gauge readings?

If the Miles to Empty is accurate when the gauge is reading off then it's cluster. If they are both off and reading the same then it's the senders.

Default I've got the same problem with my fuel gauge.

From what I've heard, it's a bad movement piece in the gauge itself, and can be replaced if you can find a spare cluster and really know what you're doing. A friend of mine found a guy in the UK who occasionally lists a cluster repair service on eBay for $70, but you have to ship your cluster to him.

In light of all this, I've decided to just let my fuel gauge be incorrect and use the miles to go reading instead because it seems to still be very accurate.

Default SInce it's more than the fuel gauge - it's definitely the cluster

Default fuel senders? mine were wacky and replaced over the summer. gauge would show empty when it was full

and full when it was empty, vice versa and anything in between. VAG showed me a fault but the dealer told me "everything was within spec" and I could come pick up the car "as there was no issue". It was only after I told them that I had read the fault codes myself and would show them when I got there shortly - god forbid they had cleared them - that my car was taken apart and lo and behold they found the issue. they then had the car 2 if not 3 days. They told me then that if I had other problems that "the cluster would need to be replaced"... haha on me. A short time thereafter the temp gauge started showing the car running warm - then warmer - then full tilt HOT- even though block 49 shows engine coolant dead on. Car is back in at 99,969k for cluster swap via CPO currently...

so it must be the Gauge.

Default Yep. :-(

The other symptoms were pointing that way too unfortunately. Try the letter to AoA and hope for the best.
