Default VAG-COM

So thinking about ordering me a VAG tool and the only one I have found is the Ross-Tech one for about $299. Just needed some advice if there are better ones or better prices out there for it.

Default There is no better, there is cheaper via Ebay

Some have had problems with the Ebay cables. But others have had great success with them. Personally I went with the genuine Ross-Tech and fully registered software right from the start. I wanted it to be hassle free and to have one source to go to if I had any problems. If your more adventurous then you can save yourself a few bucks.

Default Nope...

not as far as I know anyway.

And as far as I know, there really aren't any Porsche scan tool solutions that will read anything more than engine DTC's.

I'm getting ready to buy this, but even that tool will only have dedicated support for the 996, which means that you'd have to get engine DTC's from the generic/global OBDII function.

Default Thanks....I'll nose around...>

Picked up a GS200 for the TT, but it's pretty proprietary to VW/Audi stuff. Neat little traveling reader though..Errors when plugged into the P-car..

Default so. the ebay thing

I have to admit, I've been meaning to buy a VAG-COM for about a year and a half now. All obvious things aside, why is it that VAG-COM is ~ $300 and there are these things on ebay for ~$25. Do they work?

Default Some work, some don't....>>

You still have to buy a license ($99) from Ross-Tech if you want a fully functional program though...

Default I have had very good success using a cable from Alpha-Bid off eBay...

You can only use it on a single computer (per Ross-Tech license), though (you can use it with unlicensed funtionality on as many as you want). If you want to use the full software on multiple computers, the Ross-Tech is the way to go.

http://stores.ebay.com/alpha-bid</a

How's that little tool working in your earlier post that you linked to? At this stage, I really just want something to read and clear codes with. If the one you linked to works fine for that, it's only $25 and why the hell not buy it?

Thanks.
