very noobish coolant question

Hey guys, I'm new here but have been lurking for some time now. My sister just bought a 2003 1.8T TT and the other day she was complaining the temp guage was past the middle mark. My dad wants to either add more coolant or flush the system (as a precaution) but he doesn't know what kind of coolant to use. Now, I've searched all over the boards and have only heard of the coolant called "G12". What is that? Is it the brand, type of coolant, or code name? I come from the BMW world so I have no knowledge of turbo cars and their necessities. Is "G12" the only coolant Audis use or are there others? Any help is appreciated!
Thanks, Gordon

or flush the system, it's normal to have the temp gauge pass one tick, especially with the air con not swtiched on. The car will only activate the fans after passing the one tick mark and start the cooling. Do a search on this, plenty of assurance for worried folks like you.

It does sometimes drift north of straight up on the gauge but doesn't stay there for long. Generally it does so for a short time and doesn't go beyond the next marking. This behavior seems to normal, but infrequent

even with an '03 you have to consider coolant sensor... or instrument cluster...
'flush or adding coolant' is a no impact activity
Under warranty - go to the dealer!

and while idling/not moving. When this happens, the fans will switch on to start moving air accross the radiator.
While moving or in cold temps, it should stay at the center mark.

With the fan not running constantly (AC off) mine always reached the next tick before the fan comes on and brings it to just below the middle tick.

I run the climate control in "econ" mode to save gas (unless it is really hot or humid), so the fan will not kick on until the temp hits the first notch.
