Very Strange Climate Control. Can anyone explain this....

The temperature display shows 63 F. I have set my climate control for 72 F. And then set the control for "Auto". What do you expect... some hot air blowing through, right? No. the air vents on the center console are blowing chilled air. Yes. And the side vents by the door are blowing slightly warmer (but still cold) air. What's going on. This is not how my A4 used to work. Anybody have any ideas...<p>Saty C

as the outdoor temperature, but the interior compartment of your car is already at 72. Just to see, try setting your inside temp at 76 or something high and see if heat kicks in. My car is always warmer inside than it is outside. Just a thought.

I noticed that the side vents were barely blowing, but the fan thing had like 6 bars which told me it should be blowing pretty darned hard. The center vents weren't blowing at all and just kinda seemed to have some air circulating through them...Might have even been cold. Well, since the display said it should be blowing pretty hard, I remembered how my previous car only blew the hot air down at my feet, so sure enough, that's what the TT seems to be doing. It puts most of the hot air down at your feet. If you want to change this behavior, you can just click the buttons to change where the air is directed and it will come out nice and warm from your center vents.

The TT (and I believe most other Audi's) do NOT blow the air as hard as it says it is until the air is warmed up, at least, in my car this is how it works. If I get in the car, and the ambient is like, say, 40 degrees, and I set the heater to 70 degrees, it blows *very* little air until it warms up to about 60 degrees.
I think this is an AWESOME feature (if it's not a feature, I'm NOT getting it fixed), because this way, you can set the temperature you want, but you won't get blasted by the cold air sitting in the system, and things don't get going until the air is warm enough. I adore this feature/bug.

As noted in other posts, auto system directs different temperature and amount of air to different vents. Cold air settles, warm air rises, so when you first get in your car, air near floor is cooler than air near your face, and any warm air out of upper vents will rise, pushing cooler air toward your feet.
Additionally, if sunload is high (bright, but cool day), upper portion of cabin air is warmed, making the cold-feet effect worse.
Typical climate control programming takes all this into account, as well as not blowing cold air on you (while engine is cold). Also in A/C mode, many auto controls do not immediately go to max cold/max blower until air is actually cooled.
They may then recirculate the air until cool down is achieved then switch to outside air.
It would be possible, with cool outside air (<50 say), with very bright sunlight like in mountains, for your system to be cranking out cold/cool air at face level and heat on your feet.
Within it's programming limitations, it will try to keep the cabin the temp you select, but it should err to "warm feet, cool face" if it has to.
FWIW, using auto air, and simultaneously opening a window a little (which lots of smokers seem to do), can thoroughly confuse the auto climate control. If it's cold outside, and the cabin temp. sensor senses the cold outside air from the open window, it will increase the heat to the lower vents, which you might decide is too hot for you. If you then open the window a little more to cool things down, the situation worsens.
Special case: TTR with top down on cool/cold day. Using auto with temp at 73, for example will cause system to pump lots of heat onto your feet and probably upper level too, which is probably just what you want. That with heated seats on can allow comfortable top-down crusing in cool/cold weather. It's either good design, or good luck.
My $.02

Coldest day of last winter, I got in the car after work (parked outside). Fan came on FULL BLAST as soon as car started.
Display read -25.
Don't know if that's a feature, a bug, or a one time glitch. Only 1 day that cold.
AkRascal: Ever have that happen?
