Default Wanna buy a used 03 TT, have some concerns.

Hello everyone,
Here is the story, I want to buy a used Audi TT 03 convertible with around 27K miles.
The price seem to me a bit high compared to other TTs 13.5K, but apart from the broken LCD screen in the dashboard, I do not see other exterior problem.
I read a lot about the problems with the 1.8t engine 225hp:
  • Coil missfire
  • LCD screen
  • Carbon buildup
  • Oil pump at inside the oil pan (I think this is from the 2.0...)
Since it only has 27K miles and it looks sharp. I'm really temped to buy it, but it also has 15 yrs, the timing belt hasn't been changed and neither the water pump.
What do you guys think?

Replace the timing belt immediately. Water pump should be fine with those few miles assuming proper coolant is in the system.

Never heard of carbon build-up issues....

I bought a 52000 mile 2001 Roadster last Feb. I did a timing belt and tensioner and water pump as soon as I got it home. The plastic water pump impeller did have cracks. I had to buy tires pretty soon too. They looked great, ( Michelins) but they were 10 years old and two of them separated after a couple thousand miles. Check the rear window seal to the roof carefully. Also make sure the door locks and trunk release work well with the key remotes.
It’s a good idea too to check the radiator fans. Both should run if the air conditioning is on. Good luck! We enjoy ours when the weather is nice.

Default Foolish not to replace the WP if you are doing the TB

Don't know what year they switched from plastic impeller to metal, but everything associated with the TB (tensioner, etc) should be replaced since you are there anyhow. None of the items the OP listed are chronic issues except dash LCD/cluster. Don't know where he found them. Also check the glove box latch for proper operation since it is a $1K part to replace. Don't know when they fixed this issue. The latch was bad in my 01 but solid in my 04. OP should read this FAQ Fourtitude.com - Audi TT FAQ
