Default Weird Sounds??

I just bought a 2000 TT 180 back in August, and it's a great car thus far!

I'm not sure if this has already been a topic of discussion, I've looked and can't find it... i apologize if it has..

Recently when i start up my car in the mornings a loud whining noise comes from the engine bay.. it doesn't stop unless i turn the car off and then on again... it will also happen if the weather is cold... any ideas of what this could be??

Default describe the whining noise?

did you stick your head in the engine bay and try to pinpoint what area the sound is coming from?

okay... it kind of sounds like the sound when your in a plane and the engines start powering up to take off.. ya probably a bad analogy but it sounds almost exactly like that...

i did stick my head in the bay.. and the noise is coming from the front of the engine, below the exhaust it sounds like

Default I bet it's normal... I think it's the turbo warming up...

I think you're referring to a high pitched kind of whirring noise... if so, it will stay on for a few minutes while the engine warms up and it will go away in a few minutes...

Somehow I doubt it is the turbo "warming up". It is not normal but that doesn't mean it's serious

Default That's not it......>

It's your cold start air pump that runs when the motor is cold on start up. Called the secondary air injection system. The pump whines just like you describe and pumps air to the exhaust manifold until the car warms up. It'a an emissions thing..

Mounted on teh front Passenger side of the engine..
