Well for those very few of you who care, the winter wheels are on.

Though by no fault of my own.
Nothing went right. The jack I borrowed, although it seemed just fine and weight-wise was more than adequate, wouldn't raise the car enough on the proper jack points (okay, i *did* get this part right) to let the wheels turn so they could be removed. I tried inserting a piece of wood between the jack and the jack point, to no avail.
At this point, after trying everything I could think of, I asked for help from our neighbor. (sigh) He asked what the jack that came with the car looked like. I showed him. He wasn't willing to use it either... but we came up with the idea to use the floor jack as a back up and use the car's jack to raise the car just enough more to get the wheel free. That ended up working although I'm thoroughly convinced that the jack in the kit with the car is a piece of crap (just as my most reliable resources have said) and I would never ever dream of using it again.
Yes Chris, I chucked the wheels but the jack stands were useless as I couldn't raise the car enough to get them positioned. I appreciate Sooooo Much now what it means to have the right tools for the job.
I also now know better than to think that just because something sounds like a fairly easy job, doesn't mean it is... and I imagine the tire shop in town will see me again come spring.
At any rate, (Tom), I was careful and all's well that ends well as I still have all ten fingers and toes, and all other appendages intact. Not worth the $35 I tried to save doing it myself though...
Live and learn.
The end.

I find most jobs (particularly around cars and gardening) are more trouble than the cost of having someone else do it. Of course, that means I never get beyond the learning curve, when I could actually do something competently myself...
