If its a small company, then you have to be a "jack of many traits" and so intelligence is very important. If its a big company with a hierarchy of work, then programmer should really concentrate on programming and not thinking. There was an experiment done a while ago with people of different IQ levels and low level programming was found to be done best by those with lower IQs. Not to mention that anyone with a higher IQ will get bored of mandate programming work. Honestly if I was hiring a guy for basic programming work on "do what you're told" basis...I would not want a very smart employee, as ridiculous as that sounds
