Default What happen when a cluster finally goes?

Mine is going bad. Lines are missing on the info screen and the fuel gauge is messed up. It says I have a half tank left when my low fuel indicator screen comes on. I am now looking at my miles traveled more closely so that I dont run out of gas. Just what exactly will happen when it goes? I know it wont start but what makes that different from the battery being dead. I'm just wanting to prepare myself for when it goes, so I know what it is. TIA

Default 2nd

I have the same issues of a failing cluster.. I have a 2001 and I wanted to find out if I have the immobilizer or not (I saw the icon on the dash but still wanted to check). One week ago the cluster finally went, and this was evident because the lights no longer flickered on, gauges wouldn't move and mileage counter wouldn't light up. I could still start the car though, and had my tech remove the cluster. Once removed, the immobilizer was activated and the car wouldn't start. I wasn't ready to leave my car there (then send the cluster to BBA-Reman) so I had the contacts re-seated and the cluster remounted.. cluster worked (pre-failure, lights flickered, etc.) and car started. At least by reseating the contacts, I have more time to plan out when to leave my car disabled and cluster mailed out.

Default Don't think I've ever heard of a complete failure

to the point where the car won't start (even with an immobilizer). You may have nothing on the display and no gauges, but as long as it's plugged in I think the car will continue to run.

YMMV.

Default You really don't want to wait until the displays all stop working >>>

You won't have any idea what the actual milage is anymore. But I do remember a post where this happened to someone and the car still started.
