Default what happens when you get caught speeding? can anyone report first-hand?

A friend of mine is a ticket-fixer. I asked him if we had an "excessive speeding"
law here in NC. The NC Code makes anything > 80mph seem quite serious. That same day he had just dealt with a case where someone
was "caught" doing (a mere) 94. ( "Caught" makes it sound so criminal.)

She was "ticketed for 94mph in a
55mph zone. Her insurance will double, she will pay $90 court cost and
somewhere between $200 and $600 fine in addition to $10 to get her
a driving record and more money for my fee. If she plead guilty to the
original charge she would face a one year suspension of her license."

"She said that when she passed the cop
she immediately pulled over and had her hand sticking out her window with
license, insurance and registration in hand. Smart driver."

My friend is a believer in Valentine One, BTW.

Default In VA....

exceeding either: more than 20 over the posted limit, or 80mph, whichever is lower, is reckless driving. I forget but I think it's a 6pt hit on your drivers license. I've gotten two of these in my life so far. Each time I've gone to court, acted nice, and had the following results:

1) Judge thought fine was too steep - knocked it down to around $100-$120 IIRC
2) Wasn't able to get charge reduced, still reckless (6pts on license)
3) Insurance rates didn't budge (*)
4) 3 years later, pts drop off the license, and you're back to square one.

(*) My insurance agent once told me there were two types of insurance companies... I forget the terms, but I think one was "mutual". Anyway, he said type "A" will periodically check your record and base your rates from that. Type "B" bases your rates solely on charge claims. So far I've gotten something like 2 speeding tickets and 2 reckless drivings in my driving career, and my rates just keep going down over the years. I specifically asked my agent about this when getting a new car in '93, and while I didn't use the term "reckless", I said I had just gotten a "serious speeding ticket", so I even owned up to him about it, and it didn't matter. This is with State Farm in Central VA.

I am also under the impression if you're caught going fast enough, they can revoke your license there on the spot. Probably talking in the triple-digit range I'd suppose.

And around here, trying to evade police is now a Federal Offense (whatever category of crime that puts it into)

Just remembered, twice I think I've been pulled over for speeding (one for touching 80 on the interstate, 65 limit) and it those cases got away with a warning and a 5 minute wait while he "ran my records".

BTW what do you mean by "ticket fixer"? Fancy lawyer?

Default You ARE a criminal if you speed excessively--period!

I don't care if you're an Indy driver (like the Unsers)...if you are doing 94 in a 55, you have committed a criminal offense. When you do this, you impact society at large:

1) you place yourself and others at grave risk
2) your insurance goes up and the insurance industry gets a valid excuse to raise all rates based on percentages of drivers doing such things--we're all included--not just you.
3) the fines should be supplemented by jail time for repeat offenders just like DWI.

This is my opinion after 20+ years as a jaded cop who saw his share of carnage on the roadway attributed to those with "race driver" mentality on our freeways!

In CT, I believe over 85 is considered "Reckless Endangerment", They cuff you and haul your *** away

So you're saying most CTcops cruising speeds is reckless endangerment? Can cops arrest themselves?

Default If you breath, you will die! So, what?

If you live you will die.
If you live hard, you may die early!
It's more likely that I will take out my neighbor backing out of the driveway than by speeding...

Statistics show that, overwhelmingly, most accidents, fatal and otherwise, are caused by drivers that are driving to slow! Second is those that are not paying attention! I don't think you are reaching that crowd here...

Just had to take drivers education to clear a ticket and that point stuck!

Default in re: what is a a "ticket fixer"?

Yeah, there are lawyers that specialize in helping people
facing imposition of the " speed tax". I wouldn't call them
"fancy" though. Salt-of-the-earth is a phrase that comes
to mind, friend-of-car-enthuasists maybe? Application of
the speed tax is quirky. A specialist in dealing with your
state's system (probably Byzantine, and the layman doesn't
even understand something as basic as PJC (prayer for
judgment continued) can help you make the best of a
bad situation.

Default This is one reason why I tend to speed more on backroads in the middle of nowhere...

I do speed on the highway (my average speed seems to be creeping up too), but for the most part, I prefer to go fast on back roads that I know. Less chance of finding a cop in the middle of nowhere with no houses in sight. Also, twisties are more fun to me than going 120. ;-)

Chances are, you'll get a ticket on the highway before you do on a back road (CT excluded).

When I applied for my license in NC, I read that they could take your license away at 75mph or 15 over. Neither is very fast when highways around RTP, NC are 65mph.

V1 is the way to go!!

My Volvo has gone from 24,600 to 26,200 miles this week (NC to OH to NY to ME). I'll finish the drive in a week heading back to NC. I didn't see (or get any radar beeps) until I got to Ohio. I saw two at the border on I-77 and one more within an hour. I continued to see troopers in Ohio on then on to Buffalo. They were all over around Buffalo. Across NY on I-90, I didn't see too many and none were trying to hide at all. They had K or Ka announcing their presence. I only got one instant-one hit in New England too.

It was a great trip... very relaxing when you aren't speeding too much. The cops will leave you alone and you don't have to watch out for them. Much safer that way when the wife and dogs are with me too.
