Default Wheel bearing replacement with rental tools only...

Ok, I've been fighting with this the last weekend, but this is what I learned (all this is assuming you remove the wheelbearing housing from the car):

- Rent a master driver set from Autozone
- Rent a slide hammer from Autozone
- Rent a 5 ton puller from Autozone
- 30mm 12 point socket plus breaker bar

1. Jack up the car and don't lower until the 30mm axle nut is fully tightened again !!
2. Loosening axle nut is not too hard with a 12 point 30mm socket and a breaker bar.
3. Caliper bracket, rotor and dust guard come of
easily too.
4. The lower balljoint is also easy (3 nuts, mark their positions to keep proper camber)
5. Use the 5 ton puller or a hammer with screwdriver to get the drive axle out.
6. Now use the slide hammer to pull the wheel hub out of the wheel bearing housing (use 2 jaws it fits exactly)
7. Undo the tie rod as well (need a 6mm allen wrench to counter hold it) : 18mm socket
8. Use a wheel bearing housing spreader to take the wheel bearing housing off the strut: 19mm socket

Great, now it's hammer-time :-)

7. Put the wheel bearing housing on a vice or on stones so that the bearing opening is unobstructed and take out the circlip on the outside (it holds the outer race in)
8. Use the driver disc from the driver set that fits in the remaining outer race of the bearing and you can hammer it out (toward the outside)
9. Clean the wheel bearing housing and grab the driver disc that fits on the outer race of the bearing only (it's just a bit smaller) and use the disc and a hammer to drive the bearing back in the housing, it will stop when it's totally in (no matter how hard you hit it, it will not move anymore)
10. The biggest problem you will (probably) have now is the part of the inner race that is still stuck on the wheel hub, there are two solutions:

- You need the special Audi tools to get this off (maybe you have a friendly dealer)
- Hammer and chisel, you can hit exactly where the bearing hits the hub (you have to do this through the holes in the ABS ring)

11. Once you have the inner race off the hub: put the hub on the ground with the outside down, put the wheel bearing housing with bearing on top of it (the inside of the wheel bearing housing is now facing you) and grab the driver disc that has the same diameter as the inside race of the bearing and use it with a hammer to drive the wheel bearing housing onto the hub.
12. Last but not least the all needs to go back on the car, you can have some trouble with putting the drive shaft back in later on (when the housing is attach to the strut again): just put the drive axle in as far as it goes, thread on the *new* 12 pt axle nut (with threadlock compound) and use the nut to force the hub onto the drive axle.

That's pretty much it.. It's a PAIN in the ***, but it can be done.

Default Why didn't you rent a hub shark or sir tool b-90 kit?

With the above mentioned , you can press the bearing in and out without breaking apart the suspension. Congrats , thats a rough job.

I believe our local(NJ) pep-boys will rent the hub shark. I bought the b-90 kit. Most of the local auto parts places here will also press the bearings in and out for fairly modest cost. Good luck.
