Where's my oil going?
Have had increased oil consumption for awhile now, about 117k on the car and using Mobil 1 0w40. My catch can has about a half inch of oil in it which seems like too much, also seems to have started accumulating recently, last month or two.
No large oil leaks anywhere around the engine that I've seen, no puddles on the floor, nothing collecting on the bottom of the engine. I do have a leaky valve cover gasket but that seems to be more a trickle than anything.
Car doesn't appear to burn oil, no smoke from the exhaust. Still makes good power, spiking to 22+ and then holding 18-20. Plugs look good, not fouled or anything. My fear is that my FMIC is full of oil, it's the only place I can think of that it could be going but that would mean I'll be shopping for a new turbo soon which I would rather not do.
Also the amount of oil in the catch can is slightly disconcerting. Not sure if that's from the valve cover vent or crank vent but I suspect the valve cover.
Would appreciate any ideas or thoughts on how to track this down.

i have actually planned on removng my FMIC >>>
prior to TTE for a thorough cleaning.....My plan is to fill it with slightly diluted Simple green, then shake vigorously! I will then fill it full of water and dump into a disposal container.
Why more oil...the catch can having more oil in it could indicate a plugged line on the ventilation side....so it gets drawn and dumped into the can....now, where would it come from?
have you tracked the usage via the dipstick?
Again....this is theory mind you! ;-)

I put half a quart in today, pretty sure I had put in half a quart about a month ago too
I was thinking a clog somewhere too, causing oil to end up where it usually isn't (ie catch can). All of the PCV circuit was rebuilt less than a year ago and I put a new PCV in when I installed the manifold about 2 months ago so that should all be clear, I'd hope anyway. I could go shoot some brake clean into it just to be sure

yup, try a 5w40. that 0w40 shears down to a 30 or less pretty fast
5w40's remain a 40 longer. most autoparts stores now carry mobil turbo diesel truck 5w40. it is a very robust oil. i run it in my TT and Ur.
i'd say it's being consumed. to leak that much oil it would be on the floor or somewhere visible.

Had planned to switch to Amsoil 5-40 next time I changed, maybe that will help
The other question tho, why is there so much oil in the catch can? Same reason or possibly something else?

could be.
my TT used a lot of 5w30 when i ran that in the beginning but slowed down to miniscule amounts once i change to the 5w40. not the same scenario for you but it can make a serious difference.
but seriously check out that TDT mobil 1. from the tests i've seen it's actually a little more robust than the amsoil.
