Why the absence of a pop down/up spoiler for the TT?

There was a full blown outrage over the recall and *tack-on* spoiler. Still prefer a pop-up - heck, even the turbo s beetle got one.
Clearly, it will remain a tack-on until redesign in a year, two or three.

I actually want to have one that is just slightly more noticable like the ABT rear spoler that clips on to the factory unit... Anyway, the combination of that spoiler and better shocks could save your life!! Remember the problem that early TTs had?

there was a study that measured the amount of lift at the rear of several different cars at higher speeds (say around 100mph). the TT was pretty high compared to some other cars, and the New Beetle was practically off the scale. not surprising perhaps, given the shapes, but there are still ways to combat it.
the spoiler was probably the easiest/cheapest solution, at least in the near term.
now, that doesn't mean it was the sole or even the major cause of some of the reported accidents - there could have been a number of considerations (drivers being a likely one).
I don't know how significant an effect downforce or lack thereof has, at various speeds and conditions, but it certainly makes sense that it could be a problem -at some point-. I'm sure the TT doesn't need a spoiler at lower speeds; maybe from 90mph on up it could become an issue under some circumstances. for most of us, that may mean "never", but you know how auto makers are... :-(
personally, I prefer the TT without the spoiler, but it looks pretty good with it, too. if it HAS to have a spoiler, I think they did a pretty good job.
