why won't my car go?

the tt wouldn't start earlier today.
as some of you may recall, i had problems with the battery -- which was recently replaced -- so i figured it was that again.
i again pulled the jumper cables out of my trusty '87 jetta (which has never let me down yet *knock on wood*) and attached them to the tt.
even after left to suck from my alternator for a few minutes, turning the key produced no response.
i then push-started the car (yes, i know this is potentially damaging to my cat), and it's been working properly since then.
what's going on?

the cable(s), either at the battery, or at the distribution block, starter.
more likely, your alternator is bad.
Take it to your dealer or corner garage.
They can test the output of the alt. very easily.

even when the jumper cables were attached, it wouldn't even try to turn over.
all of the connections were recently checked, and since it works fine after starting, i don't think it's the alternator (also, i believe they checked the altenator when they checked out the rest of the system).
i'm really confused.

it's the starter?Older cars had a solenoid that could also be the culprit but I don't know if the TT has one. When you get nothing try the horn & lights. If the horn works & lights are bright then you can rule out the battery & probably the alternator .Did you check the battery cables to see if they're on tight? Are you leaving an interior light on? Sorry,I'm just thinking out loud.

i thought it might be the starter, but it usually works perfectly.
i thought that it may have been a bad connection to the starter, but the tech who looked at it when they replaced my battery did a full check of the electrical system and found nothing.
i'm think there might be a dead spot in the starter somewhere -- hence why it works after it's been started -- but then i remembered that the first time all this happened, it WAS the battery and not something else.
*so confounding!!!*
