Default winter tire? Are Blizzaks still the yardstick by which others are judged?..

Or are there comparable, and cheaper alternatives?

Default not for me. I had 'em on the TT and A4, but they only last 2 seasons here. Try Nokian WR's.

or a similar Nokian.

They are not cheap tires however.
I've had them now for 2 seasons and I expect to use them for at least 2 more.
Their micro-pore tread goes to the carcass, not just near the surface like Blizzaks.
This is why the Blizzaks loose their grip in the snow and ice after a few seasons.

I had Michelin Arctic Alpins too-they were terrible.
