Wireless LAN question. What's the difference between infrastructure & ad hoc 802.11b modes?

"ad-hoc" is a rather outdated mode, but is still sometimes used to refer to the new IBSS peer-to-peer mode. Basically, you use this mode if you did not buy an "access point" device, but instead have one computer with a wireless card AND a hardwire connection.
Infrastructure/managed is the mode you select if you purchased an "access point" device, such as a linksys wireless router, apple airport UFO, netblaster access point, etc.

I have a hardwired laptop and another smaller wireless laptop using 1 card for the wireless card and the WAP/router only.
