Default Actually, they do it without the car running...>

They attach a fitting to the MAF, and pressurize the system, looking for smoke to come out the leaks...

Default Congrats... you know this could be a cool product idea

I know they use a machine to do it but I wonder if someone could make cans of the smoke they use. Then just have a little setup like the thing AC guys use to refill freon to fill up the car to test it. That would bring the price of smoke testing down to a reasonable level for home use.

I know you can get one for body work to see where doors are leaking and such but I don't know if that smoke is okay for the engine. Maybe one day they'll make a version for the intake tract.
