Would a small oil leak in a the valve cover gasket cause
any long term damage?
This weekend I thought I would give my 2002 225QC an oil change over to Mobil 1 at the 5K mark. After taking the underbody spoiler off I found a small area of crusted and fresh oil. I traced it up to the timing belt cover and suspected a valve cover leak.
So I decided to button it up, and take it to the dealer for them to figure it out. (and because Helga put on the oil filter too darn tight, I was about to try the ole 'screw driver through the side' approach)
So, the service dept calls today and tells me it is indeed the valve cover gasket and that the cover wasn't torqued down to spec. They replaced the gasket and did an oil change, 'hand tightening' the filter.
So my question is, could this have caused any long term damage? I've been adding about 1 qt of oil every other month, so the oil level really has never been below the low mark.

Mine's leaking from the same spot.....>>
No issues as long as you keep oil in the engine! Mine's just a small weep too, and they've acknowledged the need to change it out on the next visit...
