Default wow... that was a pain - secondary air pump fix >>

my secondary air pump has been leaking air for years now. it makes start-up (especially during the winter months) smelly, loud and erratic. i decided to fix it rather then buy new or used cause the prices are so high - and it's for emissions.

first i pulled the unused intercooler pipe. air ratchet really helped here.

<img src="http://www.squarewave.com/army/andrew/ttStuff/air_pump-004.jpg">

the air pump is in a really awkward position. i needed to remove the steering pump fluid line and drain the fluid to make room to pull the air pump out.

after struggling too long trying to get the darned thing out i finally was able to pop the tired old rivets out (most of the ends were collapsed and not holding the part together)...

...and put nuts and bolts in.

now the seal is nice and tight, no more air leaking - no more loud noise.

Default Nice job . . .

I know it took awhile to get that pump out . . . but all it took to fix the leaking was to tighten the two pieces together? Bad that it comes loose in the first place. (Still a great fix.)

Default really the reason i decided to spend time fixing it was >>

the car sounded like a tractor trailer in the morning. the rivets had just completely worn out. it's a poorly engineered part.

you think i was safe just putting steering fluid back in? i hear all kinds of stuff about priming the pump, etc. i didn't do any of that - i just ran a little of the new stuff through, closed the clamp and filled it. started the car - cycled the steering wheel a couple times... then filled the resevoir to max.

Default Did you drain all of the

ps fluid out? If not you should be ok, if you did drain it all out, I would assume the procedure should be followed since air may be trapped in the line. (?)

Default I wouldn't worry about it. Steve drove 300+ miles with no power steering or fluid

Fixed his leak, filled and was good to go.

I had the same issue after my stage 3 install and a leak I had. Just keep an eye on the fluid for the next few drives till it levels out.

Default Been real good.

Don't get to drive it as much as I'd like but everything has been doing fine. I need to check the brakes soon, got a minor pulse under braking that wasn't there before.

And I still smile every time I drive it.
