Default Draino!

J/K...don't try Draino.

You might try Gunk remover or Vinylex depending on what needs cleaning.

Default do you mean to clean the engine itself or the plastic covers?

If the plastic covers I use Z-16 Tire cleaner. For the engine itself I just wipe it down with a wet rag and clean it that way.

Default works just fine . . .

it does not give a shiny finish like Armor-all, it is a satin finish.

I rarely use it on the tires. I mostly use it throughout the interior of the car and the plastic engine covers Anything inside the car that is not leather or aluminum or glass or carpet I use the Z-16 on.

Is it OK to just use a pressure washer? Are there any parts to avoid?

Default no reason to use a pressure washer unless you have gone through mud .. .

and allowed it to dry for months. How dirty can your engine compartment actually be?

I have used my hose a few times that is all.

If you insist on using the pressure washer I would avoid:

the battery itself, at least on top. The oil dipstick, the oil fill cap, the brake/clutch reservoir. I would not pressure wash behind the engine where the turbo is. Keep the pressure washer away from the radiator and a/c condensor as well.

Other than that stuff I think you can do the rest. Just be CAREFUL. If powerful enough it could remove the paint as well.

*** I am NOT endorsing the use of a pressure washer in anyway! ***
