Default 2008 Audi TT winter tire size - Michelin Pilot Alpin

Been looking for winter tires for my 2008 Audi TT 3.2 Quattro. Currently running 245/40R18 for my summer setup and want to get some Michelin Pilot Alpins in 17" for winter (I live in New England.)

I've seen Michelin Pilot Alpin PA3 in 225/50R17 as well as 245/45R17. I was leaning toward the 225/50R17 for better traction, but found that the newer model tire is available. The thing is, the Michelin Pilot Aplin PA4 is only available in 235/45R17 size.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this tire size, as well as the PA4s? Also, what width wheels are compatible, 7", 7.5", 8" with each particular tire size, or does it matter?

Thanks for your input. Looking forward to my first winter with a TT!

I am also in New England (Eastern MA) and have been driving TTs since the winter of 2001. You will not be disappointed with your TT in the snow. I've handled a foot of snow with the right tires and a little winter respect and no problems getting around. I am currently running the -1 setup of the 225/45R17s on my latest TT. I don't have any experience with the Michelins as I run Nokien winter tires, but my husband runs them on his Cayman and is happy with them. I have my winters mounted on a set of Elbrus 17x7.5 wheels. I haven't had any issues other than a ding in one of the rims from the wonderfully maintained roads up here in the potholed Northeast.

I'd suggest taking a look at the reviews on Tire Rack and choosing one of the top rated tires in an appropriate size for your car. For the best traction in the snow, a narrower tire is far better ... I had top rated Blizzaks on my S4 Avant in a 235 width and that car wasnt as good in the snow as my RS4 on 225 Dunlop Wintersport M3's. I've been using the Wintersport M3's on 3 of my last 4 Audis and currently run them in a 215/50/17 on my TTS.
