If you have the 2.0 engine, it is inside the engine cover. Mine was quite a PITA to get off. You need to remove air intake coming from above the radiator where it connects to the "engine cover" and unplug the air sensor in the back left, then yank that sucker up, forst at the front then the rear.
After it's off you turn it over and remove like 11 screws which allows you to split it apart and gain access the the actual air filter. I would highly recommend a K&N air filter for better air flow and mileage.
Even better is get a neuspeed intake and never have to repeat this procedure!!

I believe it is similar. Both use an extension pipe and a "Cone" filter at the intake. The AWE uses a "box" to help separate intake air from engine (hotter) air. I am not familiar as to whether or not the AWE is any better than a Neuspeed, but I have the Neuspeed and like it for the better gas mileage and ease of cleaning. There's plenty of pictures of each in the internet.
The standard one was just a PITA, for someone who likes clean, fresh air into the engine.
