Convertible top motor..
Last week my top wouldn`t close...took it to the dealer...they reset it closed it (didn't charge me anything) and told me the convertible motor was bad.. The quote is about $600. I live in Japan and this is with a 2 year warranty.
This is not a repair I`d want to try myself and typically don`t do repairs at the dealer but this seems fairly specialized. I`m wondering if I should try a different shop or just have it repaired at the dealer??

Which motor were they talking about...? There are only four motors in the convertible top system -
The Mk2 (8J) convertible top is operated hydraulically by a hydraulic pump (driven by an electric motor) located in the trunk which operates two pistons, one on each side of the roof mechanism.
There's a motor which secures the two latches in the windshield frame.
Each of the Roof Flap Servos has a small motor (shown below)
Generally speaking, the most common problem is the Roof Flap Servos.

You can sort out the Roof Flap Servos yourself, by simply removing the roof flap servo, opening it up, cleaning out the excess grease and reinstalling it. You can use an OBDeleven to detect the fault to determine what's wrong, but if the fault is against either of the Roof Flap Servos only VCDS can perform the initialization and clear the fault.

.
Roof Flap Servo with excessive grease on the contacts causes a fault which can prevent the roof from opening or closing.
