FI engines NEED this break in period. Yes, you may not do instant damage to the engine if u beat the hell out of it during the first 1000 miles, but as the manual says (and does so with pretty much any FI car's manual) the entire life, performance and longevity of the car's engine does depend alot on how you treat it during those first 1k miles. The engine is built in such a way that you have to baby it to "warm it up" so to speak first off, then after you can drive it like it was meant to be driven. Much like new brakes need to be bedded in before use or else they will not last as long or perform near as well as intended.

Yup, two ends of the spectrum with respect to break-in. With all my new cars, I take the "drive it like you stole it" position BUT ensure the engine is warmed up first and cooled down afterwards. Never had an issue with burning oil and the only issue I've had is worn tires and brakes
