Default It's 240Z vs. 300ZX, all over again.

Freeman Thomas and Audi did the TT and rocked the world. Albrecht Goertz and Nissan did it twenty-five years before that.

But in time, both companies had to move forward, and the "Mk. II" cars that resulted -- the 300ZX in Nissan's case -- are/were better-driving cars than the originals.

But for some, the magic gets diluted the second time around, and for others, newer is always better.

I remember how the 300ZX was considered bloated and overdone at the time by 240Z purists. That's not happening with the Mk. II TT. Most TT Mk. I fanatics (I'm one of them) think that the new TT is at the very least a pretty smart reiteration, an intelligent redesign.

And a better car. Personally, I like the new Roadster better than the coupe. I miss that famous crease on the coupe's rear deck too, and wonder why the hell they didn't carry that over? (Cost, cost, and cost, probably.)

That said... I'm sticking with my '06 Mark I, and considering myself lucky to have gotten one of the very last 'real' TT's. It rings all the bells for me, and the new TT rings none, save that I recognize that it's a fine machine, and will probably drive circles around my Mk. I.

And that's fine with me.

Default my opinions..

the MK2 TT has grown on me significantly, partly due to my good mate 2953's enthusiasm for it, and partly due to the appearance really growing on me. i've thought alot about the car....which is strange especially since i have yet to even see the car in person.

after looking and analyzing tons of photos, i've found that the design (interior and exterior) has been normalized. i don't think the MK1 TT was a 'normal' car. It was heavy, had a disturbingly good interior, and basically looked like nothing else Audi or anyone else had made in this era. Even in New York City, i get people asking "what is that?". That wouldn't be happening to a design 7 years old in any other normal production automobile.

The new car will not attract that sort of attention for sure. It is a design which has common features with other Audi cars, as well as other "sporty" cars on the streets. That being said, the new TT will likely shame its competitors when put side by side to judge beauty. It is a stylish construction, there is a depth to its appearance which really does seem to make it stand out. One of the things which remains to be seen is what it looks like in certain angles. The side profile of the car in some pictures makes it look HUGE in the tooth (front) which i hope is masked in real life.

the car is lighter, quicker, more agile, better made, and more muscular than our TTs. At the same time, it will never BE the same car as the TT.....just like a 2006 Porsche 911 RS will never be the same as a 1972 911 RS 2.7.

I, for one, can't wait to drive one and to execute it through the streets. It will be nice to see what i'm missing before I order my 2008 (or 2009) Alfa Romeo Brera

I agree with most of what you said, but how can you speculate the original being a "real" TT versus, the MkII (or beyond) evolving into the "real" TT...

Default Very loaded (and ironic) figure of speech, when I called the Mk. I "real".

It's the one that resonates with me -- and I recognize exactly how heavy and outmoded much of it is, and how little it related to the overall product line.

Nah. Any TT made by Audi is 'real'. End of story.
