K&N may be the best filter in general in the world, but it's not the same as the best filter for a given application.
I did a MAF log of my stock filter and ITG filter after I was chipped which would exacerbate any difference between the two. The difference between the two was statistically insignficant.
I didn't buy a k&n because I had read about the rubber surround; however i fyou have access to the vag-com I would highly reccomend a before and after MAF log!!

If you look at the picture Jeffc31337 posted, it's of a standard paper filter. Take note of the yellow rubber surround, and that it is not visible in the intake side of the filter pleats.
The K&N has a much more robust rubber support, and it actually extends down farther on the pleats and into the intake area of box. The contention was that in this application, the K&N was blocking a good portion of the intake and reducing flow.

Ive had K&N on my MK1 and now my MK2, no probs yet. Even if the MK2 filter has too much rubber coming down the side, just trim it off.
