Default need opinions on what to do.....

Kinda long and somewhat off topic, but here it is:

I currently have a 2004 A4 1.8t. Love the car, and it has about 45k miles. I still have about $8,000 left to pay on it. When the MKII finally gets here next spring, I'm really thinking of up-grading. However, to be able to afford the $40k price tag, I'll probably have to trade in my A4. Not sure if I can live with a TT as an every day car. It's not that I use the A4 for that much, and usually, I'm in it by myself....but having the 4 doors is nice every now and again.

Yesterday, I went and drove a Pontiac Solstice. Suprisingly, it was a really fun car to drive, and road very well. Price tag on that with all the options was only $25K. And I could get one of those, and keep my A4 as my daily driver. So the question becomes, get one really nice small car, or settle for something that I don't want as much, but have two cars, one for work and one for play? I just think that every time I saw an MKII go by, I'd be kicking myself. For those of you with the MK1, how practicle is it?

Default go on........

I do REALLY want a new TT, just worried about the price and practicallity. I don't have that much experience with TT's in general, so I'm not sure how they work as daily drivers. It appears that with the seats down, the hatch back design can actually swallow a lot. I was just hoping to get some thoughts on the matter.

(the Solstice basically has no turnk to speak of....that is where the gas tank is)

Default The coupe is very practical as a daily driver as long as you don't carry people

But, if you're gonna keep the A4 and get a weekend toy skip the solstice and find a used S2000, a much better car for the same money.

Default The Solstice is a better buy....

Let's face it: Automobiles are a horrible investment. The smiles per mile and smiles per dollar winners will always be cars like the Miata (MX-5) and the new Solstice/Skyy twins. There is no doubt that those cars are tremendous buys.

The Corvette is even a tremendous buy compared to the TT, Z4 Coupe, Cayman and even compared to the 911.

I am personally finding it more and more difficult to even consider owning another new car.

Default Current TT can swallow a lot of cargo, Mk II cargo space should be even larger.

Here'a pic of my TT loaded with two road bikes, a bicycle trailer and camping gear from a few years ago. I did take the rear seats out to get more room, but I had no obstructions looking out the rear window.

Default It's been a great daily driver for me.

Coming from an A4, as well. Honestly, for daily driving, and trips with my wife, the coupe is fantastic. We have taken it on ski trips, fully loaded, with the skis in the car. The only time I ever want more room is when taking our kids along too! Thankfully we have another vehicle for that, but for daily driving, weekend trips, and roadtrips with two, it is perfect.

Having had a Miata, I can tell you that the toy trunk gets old real fast. Don't fool yourself - it's almost impossible to pack two weekend bags, and the Solstice's is smaller. Forget about golf clubs!

Default Re: need opinions on what to do.....

I had a TT coupe 1.8 FWD until I broke my leg and couldn't drive it....I got an A4 to replace it . I love the A4 but it does not give me the chills and thrills and the LOOK of a TT. As soon as this lease ends (16 months) I'm getting another TT coupe. By that time it should be out 5 or 6 months.
I have an 11 year old daughter...she will fit but not for long...however, Mom has an Accord....the TT has tons of room to carry stuff and since I am alone to go to work most of the time, it is the perfect car living here in Pennsylvania suburbs.. A sports car with Quattro that gets me to work no matter what the weather...cargo space and emergency backseat...I have been on 7 hour trips with my family in the TT and it was the best. As an older guy with a young head I want my sports car...but I cannot be that white-haired Corvette dude....that's not me. If I had the bigger bucks and another car i'd go with a Porsche Cayman or a Carrera. I'm not rich. AND I need the Quattro. Live in Florida? Don't need Quattro much. There is no other car for me except another A4...after I use up my sports car needs I'd opt for another A4 or by that time, if I can still drive at all, an A5, and I have driven every one to check them out...I owned an RX7 for 12 years...loved it but would never go back after a TT coupe. NO COMPARISON...BMW, INFINITI, NISSAN 350...MIATA...RX8...ACURA...CORVETTE....SKY...SOLS TICE....MERCEDES....JAG...FERARRI...TT has all the things that I need in a car...The look , the Quattro and all the other good stuff combined with performance that suits its class and price. The Solstice? Too small , no trunk at all...not even a bag of golf clubs, worse than a Boxster....Manual top....and all the amenities are Pontiac. I guarantee it will rattle like a Pontiac Firebird or Camaro in a couple of years if not sooner. I drove the new G6 hardtop convertible at the dealers...What a DOG...Slow, heavy..terrible handling and the top got stuck on its 5 minute trip...piece O'Junk. Solstice is a cheap fun car if you never drove a TT ...otherwise EHHH !Now, If all you can afford is a Solstice then, that is the way to go but if you can afford a TT get a lease, and you'll never mess with your car again...let the dealer do it all...lose it in 3 years and get whatever suits you at that time. There is one car that can do what a TT will do...A Carrera S4 AWD but since that is closer to $100,000 I pass on that one.Do the TT , let your wife drive the big car and use it for utility and passengers.
signed,
Just an old, self-centered sports car dude.

Default so far, I've doen 117,00 miles of daily driving in 2 sequential TTs . . .

and it's a great daily car. Coupe has enormous capacity, and rear seats, uh I mean package shelf, are very useful for stuff you need while traveling. As others have pointed out, those seat-like things in the back are not for people. The TT is a very competant GT car. Of course I'm always careful about where I park. Don't kick yourself, get the TT. The Solstice is beautiful, but the 177hp engine will fail to satisfy - you might wait for the GXP version coming soon. It handles pretty well though, even now. I found the interior bits to be sorta cheesy and flimsy. The TT interior experience, in our Mk Is anyway, is unmatched. Layout, beauty, solidity, elegance. If it fits you, it's one of the best places to be on the planet. IMHO. Good luck.

Default Re: The Solstice is a better buy....

That is exactly why I lease...a new car every 3 years ( I get bored easily) but I can get another TT if I like it that much , or buy the one i leased...I don't want a luxury car off warranty so either I BUY a pre-owned with an extended warranty or lease a new one.It always is better to BUY a Certified Pre-owned and let the 1st guy take the hit, if you get a warranty and you're fairly certain the car was well kept.
When you lease then it doesn't matter. Just out of my own love for cars I would never abuse my car , leased or not. So whoever gets mine will get a great deal for sure.Ausi is a great car but if it's off warranty it can kill you if something happens.
