I dropped the TT off this morning to have the new motors installed. My service writer stated that Audi had just issued a TSB (don't know the number) stating that the problem can be corrected by an adjustment to the top's alignment.
They performed the repair per the TSB, and the top works good as new (knock on wood).
Really, I was quite relieved to learn of this development as I was extremely wary of my baby being 'opened up'.

he said that was the first approach...which failed.
next was to replace the motors...that failed
awaiting a new part from Audi..wont be in until December..
