Unless you want the space of the GTI, the TT 2.0T is the better car by far... (more)
... It's much lighter (aluminum space frame), has a superior suspension (better still with the mag ride option), has vastly superior handling, is more rigid, is better balanced, and exhibits less oversteer.
Plus the new TT is obviously better looking than the GTI. It's one of the best looking cars on the road today. The interior, especially with the extended leather package, is the closest you'll get to sports car perfection this side of the R8. Controls, build quality and seating position are impeccable.
Don't let the clunky, sloppy handling poser car that was the original TT fool you into thinking that this new car is a re-badged VW. The MK2 TT is a real sports car, based on a considerably more re-engineered golf platform than the disappointing (yet pretty) original.
The one advantage the GTI has is rear passenger space.
As far as price compared to a VW, that is irrelevant. The TT is a premium vehicle with superior refinement and engineering to justify the extra price. It should be cross shopped with Porsche's and BMW's in terms of value for the money, and not with a VW.

Re: TT 2.0 vs. Golf GTI
I owned a 2001 TT 225 Quattro Coupe for 4 years and recently purchased a 2007 4-door GTI with DSG transmission.
There really isn't any comparison because the cars are so far apart in price and unfortunately, I haven't driven a new 2.0TT.
For years, my formula for the perfect car is: short wheelbase + AWD + turbo = greatness.
I bought the GTI because I was in the market for a fun 4 door car.
The TT is a style tour de force and if you want one, you should get it.

Re: TT or GTI
Well said, Primo. The GTI is a GREAT car for the money. With the right wheel combination it can handle great and is a blast to drive. It comes down to a 10k difference. My god, its the same engine after all...
