Default 01 Audi A6 Vag Com Reading Please Help

I am experiencing a problem with my Xenon headlights on my 2001 Audi A6 2.7T 6 speed. The headlights are all over the place, never are both in the correct position, sometimes, more often the driver side is aiming correctly or close to correct but not quite. I have very little experience with Vag-Com and my Ross Tech cable but when poking around tonight here is what I have found.

If I run into controller 55 Xenon Range and run the Fault Codes I receive the error

1 Fault found: 01539 – Headlights Not Adjusted 35-00 - -

The next thing I did to further evaluate the situation is go the measuring blocks. When logging into Group 1 I see two things:

Voltage Supply (Terminal 15) 12.4 Volts

Voltage Low Beam (Terminal 56b) 12.88 Volts

Granted these volt measurements vary while the car is running but stay very close to the measurement I stated above. I believe these are correct.

Next I log into “GROUP 2” I THINK THIS IS MY PROBLEM!

Voltage Front Level Sensor 2.9 Volts – 2.88 Volts it varies on a consistent back and forth basis between the two but shouldn’t it be about 12.88 volts?

Voltage Rear Level Sensor 2.9 Volts Volts – 2.88 Volts it varies on a consistent back and forth basis but shouldn’t it be about 12.88 volts like the others?

Please help I really want to fix these headlights as its turning winter and its pretty unsafe to drive like this. Often times both headlights go as low as possible and even with the high beams on I cant see very far ahead of me.

The level sensors output between 0 and 5 volts. Check those voltages with the ignition on but the car not moving. Rock the back end of the car up and down at the bumper; the rear sensor should change considerably more than the front. Rock the front of the car up and down at the bumper. The front sensor should change more than the rear. In principle, the following procedure should get rid of the fault code:

When you say with the car on but not moving should it be running or not? I will do this tonight when I get home. I sure hope it fixes my headlights. They really need some help. Thanks! Any idea why or how they would become unaligned? FYI the car has been like this since I bought it.

Ignition on, engine not running. If the battery is marginal, connect a battery charger first.

Hi Uwe,
Slightly different problem on my 03 A6 Avant. The day I got the car back from timing belt service, my HID warning light went on in the driver display. I pulled the codes and came up with 00776 only. Voltages looked good as you described above on both front and rear sensor but I pulled the left front wheel to look at the connector to the front sensor. Lot's of dirt, but everything was clean inside so I cleared the codes and heard the headlight motor(s) set the lights. I drove it around for two days without having the light come back on, but I also had about 200lbs of Salt in the back of the wagon.

As soon as I took the salt out, a couple of miles later the warning light came on again. This time I received both 00776 and 00774. Tried running the output tests, but only got an error message stating that function was not available. Have looked over the wiring harness connections to the lights and can't see anything obvious.

So this morning (about a week later) I cleared the codes, the output tests ran fine, and I could hear both motors raise and lower the lights but now I'm getting 01539 which I can't clear without it immediately coming back. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
THanks

Have you looked into these possibilities?

http://wiki.ross-tech.com/index.php/01539
http://wiki.ross-tech.com/index.php/00774
http://wiki.ross-tech.com/index.php/00776

Also, have a look at the measuring blocks. I believe 002 should show sensor readings.
